Acne and Sun – Is Sun Exposure Save For Skin With Acne?

It is generally known that excessive sun exposure is unhealthy. Being exposed to the sun causes rapid aging of the skin and it may even increase pigmentation in some areas of the body. It also has been found that long-term sun exposure does not benefit to skin with acne problems.

Although some of us may feel that their acne improves after getting some sun, according to doctors it is a widespread myth. Sometimes the skin may appear healthier. But it is only a temporary condition because the sun lessen the acute septic problems. However, the actual problems with acne come back after a few weeks.
In case of mild acne, the acne symptoms may seem to dissapear due to greater skin pigmentation. But in reality, the skin gets thicker after sun exposure. Which causes that skin pores and sebaceous glands to close. The subsequent inflammation then becomes even stronger than the previous one.
Sun may even restore these problems for elderly people who suffered from acne in their youth. This phenomenon is called Mallorca acne. So if you belong to this group of people, you should stay away from the sun as much as possible.
Acne And Sun Can Go Together Only With Good Sun Protection
If you cannot imagine a summer without the sun and therefore cannot avoid sun exposure, make sure to use a good quality sun-protection. With minimum of SPF 15 depending on your location. In countries with really high temperature, especially close to the equator, SPF 30 or more is strongly recommended. In general, look for sun-protection cosmetic which doesn’t clog the pores. And also doesn’t lead to formation of comedones. Also, try to avoid direct sunlight around noon.
If you are currently treating acne by using products containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, you should try to completely avoid sun exposure. These substances together with the sun exposure may cause dryness or redness and various other skin problems.
We all are looking forward to enjoy the sun. But be aware that acne and sun may not always be well compatible and try to protect your skin by using good quality sun protection products.
